Lauren Mayberry Bowls the Crowd Over at Newport Music Hall
The Super Bowl is a night that keeps millions of US families home glued to their TV set unless you were near Columbus, Sunday night to see a stellar show by Lauren Mayberry at Newport Music Hall. I took in the whole night, including an intimate VIP set where Lauren played a couple songs with only guitar and piano then delighted fans by answering many questions. If you are thinking of VIP for Lauren Mayberry, it's worth every cent spent. Cult of Venus opened the show with a set of moving synth, guitar pop music. Lauren Mayberry came on with "Crocodile Tears" and then performed most of the songs from her fantastic debut, "Vicious Creature". Her band was just a drummer and guitarist/bassist so the highlight was on her vocals which soared as she danced around the stage. Her between song chats were both charming and funny. She also did an amazing cover of The Verve's "Bitter Sweet Symphony".
