Hit The Panic Switch: Silversun Pickups Return to Detroit with Hello Mary

The last time I was supposed to photograph Silversun Pickups was March 17, 2020. I was working for HeadrushTV as a contributing photographer. It was a pretty sweet gig and eventual jump off point to starting Shots From The Show. I had secured a photo pass from the PR of the opener, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Ilan Rubin. In the days leading up to the show, more and more businesses were shutting down due to Covid. With uncertainty looming, I held tight until I got that ill-fated email 2 days before the show that the tour had been cancelled because of the pandemic.

I was bummed, to say the least. But little did we know how much things would suck for the next few years. Lives changed. People’s priorities changed. The owners of HeadrushTV decided to shut down operations. I didn’t want this dream hustle to end so I contacted my buddy Andre to help me pick up where Headrush left off. We started Shots From The Show and I started a bucket list of shows. First and foremost on that list was Silversun Pickups.

Sunday night, I finally got to cross that off my bucket list. It was an amazing night. Bonus that it was at the beautiful St. Andrew’s Hall in Detroit. Opening for SSPU were the NYC rock trio Hello Mary. They are a rock band’s rock band. Their powerful indy-rock feel captivated the audience for their 30 minute set. After a brief intermission, Silversun Pickups hit the stage. Performing a few songs from their new album, Physical Thrills, like Sticks & Stones and Scared Together, as well as classics like Panic Switch and Lazy Eye, the 19 song setlist left the crowd satisfied.
